It has been stressed over and over again that critical thinking is crucial for university students and their thinking capability must be enhanced at academic level. The reason that why critical thinking is so important in academic debate and university education is that this is the only way new knowledge is added to a particular field and it also opens the door for future research. When a research is carried out and we conclude the results with new findings it opens the door for other researchers to carry out more extensive research to find new solutions.
Jackson Matson in his book “Innovate or die” stress on unique concept of experimenting with creativity that would encourage the researcher to move forward and experiment again with new findings. His stress is on the fact that intelligent failure is crucial step for one to critically think and come to new solutions. Jack V. Matson, PhD, is a Civil and Environmental professor, who firmly believes in experimenting, intelligent failure and innovation as fundamental steps for improvement and adding knowledge to our current field. That is why critical thinking has been so important in university culture and very hot topic in academic debate. Yet, nowadays many students manage to get their essays online and get homework live help.
Matson relates intelligent failures to “innovation” in a way that failure must be stimulating and encourage to do more experiments to achieve something new.
According to Camarda, who is Deputy Director for Advanced Projects NESC,
“I believe we are facing a critical time where innovative engineering design is of paramount importance to the success of our aerospace industry. However, the very qualities and attributes necessary for enhancing, educating, and mentoring a creative spirit are in decline in important areas.”
He also states that
“There is also a recognition of a lack of engineering, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in our education systems and a trend toward trying to enhance those skills by developing K-12 educational programs such as “Project Lead the Way”, “Science for All Americans”, Benchmarks 2061”, etc. [2, 3, 4]. In addition, with respect to spacecraft development, we have a growing need for young to mid-level engineers with appropriate experience and skills in spacecraft design, development, analysis, testing, and systems engineering.”
The question as to why and how critical thinking is so important for university culture, we must be aware of the fact that innovation is vital for the growth and development of our society. The factors that will contribute to this growth and development lie in the creativity of our education system. At university level it is basic to enhance student’s problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and ability to design and develop new systems through testing and experimenting. Camarda states that these skills and qualities are at decline in our education system
Research has revealed the significance of practising creativity and innovation in our research design and education system. We must identify the key points in the success and failures of our education system. A definate success is that you can order custom essay writing at anytime and free of plagiarism.
Creativity and innovation has remarkable long-term outcomes. Our problems are ever changing with changing needs, and we need to change to bring improvement in our education system. According to Barratt critical thinking is catalyst to change it lets us learn and grow and it is like a mirror where we see ourselves and then have chance to improve. He states that deficiency to critical thinking is very serious problem and it must be resolved immediately. Warren (1995) suggested that the training of critical thinking must start from kindergarten. Critical thinking is desirable at all stages of university because it is instrumental in gaining and reaching new knowledge and developing new skills.
A combination of government or policy makers, bipartisan assembly of education, corporations, lobbyists, and activists are setting a collaboration effort as public-private partnership to reform America’s education system from pre-K to grade 12 and beyond grade 12 to prepare the children and the students to thrive and compete in the global economy.
Authors state that thinking outside the box would enable the children to be more creative and innovative. They need to be able to think of creating jobs that cannot be outsourced or automated. Creativity and innovative have been one of America’s tradition and culture and success but they have been trenched in the market of technology, standardization, and social plurality.
American children were born, raised, and grown up with technology and computer gadgets. Although they are overflowed with information and required to process the information faster, sometimes, when it comes to human development or to solve a problem, technology or how fast the technology can aid to process the information are not the right solution.
Bring the school out of 21st Century is a notion to create a global school such as pioneered by Seattle’s John Stanford International School, which is a pilot project, and where children are taught different languages, cultures from different countries such as India, China, Korea, Japan, Mexico, South America but America, and businesses. The emphasis on graduate is business and second language. Most of the children in this school are from wealthy families and the government is thinking of applying similar process to the low-income families as well, i.e. into public education system.
Many fail to realize that pilot project is often good in a small scale but fail once it is implemented in a wider scope, when it comes to public policy. Many private education institution would gladly be the first recipients and implement the program because they are small and that they fund is coming from government.
Interestingly, children are learning to know information and facts from the Google as the global media but they are not taught the foundations of the knowledge itself. Hirsh Jr. in his book The Knowledge Deficit argue that Americans’ children are being taught and funded with information just to make sense of their “reading materials beyond the grade-school level” but they are not taught to master “the fundamental building blocks of math, science or history,” and complex concepts are too complicated to be absorbed by the global students.
Many analysts are not impressed with this system. It seems that the collaborators are eager to transform the Americans; children to have “portable skills” and dump them in Singapore or China without teaching them the “nuts and bolts” of how they should get there through complex understanding of the theory and knowledge.
Some public educators argue that children should be taught theory and knowledge and how they should be able to apply theory into application.
On one hand, and in the process, the bringing out school into 21st Century is creating a culture of commercialization, which for example, children can choose a commercial product, disassemble it, analyze it, explain its environmental impact, and reengineer without sacrificing its commercial values.
On the other hand, a pilot project was conducted in 2006 among 6,200 college students. The researcher found that half of the students know how to obtain the information from Google report, they can cut and paste the information and put it into their report, but they do not know how the information is stored, how it is received, and other factors associated with information technology. Children only know how to use it but are clueless about the knowledge of information technology itself.
Sun Microsystem chief executive officer even adds his idea of creating a Wikipedia solution to this “No child left behind” where one can obtain free online information ranging from pre-K to grade 12.
The bringing 21st Century also creates a new culture of literacy where students learn to prove information based on facts but it takes them away from the basic theory behind the information itself.
Ford Motor Company as well is proposing to create the school to be more business like environment where teachers act more as project managers or consultant who work with the students in a team. Classrooms are becoming meeting room while learning are being conducted in the hall way where principles of knowledge such as chemistry, calculus, algebra, laws, and the others decorate the hall way. Learning is becoming a working process.
